Mall pilots fast electric vehicle charger powered by solar panels

ZDNet
Simon Property Group has been experimenting with electric vehicle charging infrastructure for some time now, but its new installation in Carmel, Ind., marks a departure into unknown territory for several reasons. Not only does the fast-charging system rely on 10 kilowatts of solar generating capacity, it also comes with an integrated, 75-kilowatt battery from Toshiba to store that power when it is cloudy or for when the system is used during evening hours. The first-of-its-kind installation includes both a traditional charger as well as a “quick charge” option, so that electric vehicle batteries can be replenished more quickly.  MORE

Renewables constitute all new US electricity capacity added in January

The Hill
Renewable energy accounted for all new electric capacity added in the United States last month, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. In all, 1,231 megawatts of new generating capacity were installed in January. Of that total, wind provided 958 megawatts, solar chipped in 267 megawatts and biomass contributed 6 megawatts. That’s a marked difference from January 2012, when coal led the way with 808 megawatts of the 1,693 megawatts added. Natural gas followed with 445 megawatts, and wind tossed in 276 megawatts to take the pole for renewables.  MORE

Report: Clean power is moving (gradually) into Americans’ homes

Forbes

Americans are increasingly relying more on natural gas and renewable energy for heat, power and transportation. From 2007 to 2012, natural gas use grew from 23.4 percent to 27.2 percent, while renewable energy consumption rose from 6.4 percent to 9.4 percent, according to a report. At the same time, the use of coal fell from 22.5 percent to 18.1 percent in that five-year period. MORE

US renewable-energy capacity doubled from 2009-12

Bloomberg Businessweek

Renewable-energy capacity in the U.S. almost doubled from 2009 to 2012, helping reduce the nation’s carbon-dioxide emissions last year to the lowest since 1994, according to a Bloomberg New Energy Finance report. The cumulative installed solar, wind, geothermal and biomass-based energy sources in the U.S. climbed to 85.7 gigawatts in 2012, compared with 43.5 gigawatts in 2008, the London-based research company said in a report. MORE

ELECTRIC CAR RACING

Design World

Is it entertainment or engineering? Car races are a huge deal in the US and around the world. It’s fun to see how fast we can make our machines go. The Indy 500 and Formula 1 racing, attract massive crowds and millions of dollars of investment. Drag racers compete to drive the fastest quarter mile and street racers put heart and soul in their machines to squeeze all the performance they can out of smaller block engines. Hollywood has glorified all these racing forms in movies like “Fast and Furious” and “Days of Thunder”. MORE

PA Sunshine Grants are BACK Fully Funded – no waiting list!

PA DEP

The PA Sunshine Program is, as of Jan. 24, 2013, out of the Waiting List phase and back in an active rebate mode, thanks to $7.25 million in funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority. DEP is reserving a portion of these funds to satisfy rebate reservations and applications for projects previously submitted and on the Waiting List queue, however these projects must now be completed by June 1, 2013. DEP has instituted a more stream-lined rebate application process moving forward. Contractors will first complete the solar project then submit the application for reimbursement.

In order to be eligible for the first come, first served rebate program which began Jan. 26, 2013, you must have constructed and completed your project after that date. Any project constructed or completed prior to that date must have a current approved rebate reservation from prior to Jan. 26, 2013.

Winning the DOE’s new energy tax credits: Crucial application tips

Solar Industry magazine
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Internal Revenue Service released $150 million in unused advanced energy manufacturing tax credits for clean energy and energy efficiency manufacturing projects across the U.S. The credits are the remnants of $2.3 billion in funding authorized under Section 48C of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and they cover 30 percent of the cost of new, expanded or re-equipped facilities in the U.S. for manufacturing wind turbines, solar panels and other equipment used in renewable energy projects. Forget fracking: 2012 was a powerful year for renewables

NPR
Natural gas may have reshaped the domestic energy market in 2012, lowering energy prices and marginalizing the coal industry, but America’s shale boom hasn’t undermined renewables. In fact, while analysts were paying attention to fracking in 2012, a record number of solar panels were being slapped on roofs — enough to produce 3.2 gigawatts of electricity. MORE

Using Power Production Estimates in PA to earn SREC credits

As you can imagine it will get old real fast for PA solar owner’s to have to read their solar revenue grade mater and report it to GATS on a regular basis.    Below are the guildlines from PA AEPS for using solar production estimates to receive automatic SREC/AECs credit on a regular basis:

Solar systems under 15kW are allowed to utilize estimates to earn AECs provided you do not have a Revenue Grade Production meter installed. Sunshine Fund participants are required to have a Revenue Grade Meter and therefore must report readings. If you are located outside of the state of PA and your state does not allow the use of estimates or has a different system size limit for estimates, you should not utilize estimates as it may result in invalid credits for your home state. If you are over the 15kW limit and thus do not qualify to utilize estimates.  A “Revenue Grade Production Meter” is NOT the utility meter, but would rather be tied to your inverters to record your total solar production.

So in a nut shell if you are a PA Sunshine grant recipient you must report your meter reading on regular basis (ideally monthly).  The revenue grade meter requirement for the PA sunshine program is for two years.  So after two years you could feasibly have the revenue grade meter removed and ask the AEPS administrator to allow you start accumulating your SRECs/AESs on an automatic basis based on estimates.
